George Platt Lynes is widely regarded as one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. While he achieved commercial success in fashion and portrait photography in New York, his artistic legacy is defined above all by his refined and often highly stylized studies of the male nude, produced from the 1930s until his death in 1955. Working in carefully staged studio settings, Lynes employed inventive lighting, precise posing, and controlled cropping to articulate both the physical form and the psychological presence of his subjects, resulting in images of striking formal elegance and intimacy.
