Herschel, Sir John F. W., engl. Astronom, Entdecker zahlreicher Sternnebel und Sternhaufen, Pionier der Stellarphotographie, führte die Bezeichnungen "Negativ" und "Positiv" in die Photographie ein (1792-1871). Eigh. Brief m. U. "J. F. W. Herschel". 4 S. Doppelbl. mit Adresse. Slough 23.VI.1839.
An den Astronomen Kreil am Observatorium in Mailand. Umfangreicher Brief über wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, darunter eine Übersetzung von Gauß' Aufsatz über Magnetismus. Auch diesem Brief fügte er (hier nicht mehr vorhandene) "papers" bei, mit denen er bestimmte Ansichten widerlegte. "... I am not sorry on the whole that it was so as an opportunity now offers to accompany this letter with some papers which cannot fail to interest you. - You will see by them, that the British Govt. and the East Indian Company have taken of the subject of terrestrial magnetism on a scale worthy of the subject and of our nation and we may justly hope therefore that in every country in Europe there will be found observers ready to avail themselves of so important an opportunity for extending corresponding their nations on the system of the German Magnetic Association, and communicating their results to the Royal Society ...".
