Photographer: Albert Sands Southworth (1811-1894) and Josiah Johnson Hawes (1808-1901). Portrait of a woman. Mid-1850s. Quarter plate, slightly tinted daguerreotype in leather case. 9 x 7 cm (11,5 x 10 cm).
Southworth & Hawes, the pioneering Boston-based daguerreotype partnership of Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes, set new standards for photographic portraiture in mid-19th-century America. Renowned for their refined lighting, elegant compositions, and ability to capture psychological depth, their portraits reflect a rare fusion of technical mastery and artistic sensibility. Today, their work is considered among the finest achievements of the daguerreotype era. – Case with scratches, slight oxidation in edges, slightly stronger in left and lower edge, some spots on cover glass, otherwise in good condition.
