Photographer: Skeen & Co. (active ca. 1860-1890), Scowen & Co. (active ca. 1870-1890). Views of Ceylon. 1880s. 12 albumen prints, mounted to boards. Each between 21 x 27,5 cm (22,5 x 29,5 cm) and 21,5 x 28 cm (25 x 31,5 cm). Some with the photographer's studio information in negative in lower margin.

This group of photographs offers a vivid visual record of late 19th-century Ceylon under British colonial rule. The images range from tea plantations with Tamil laborers harvesting leaves to bathing scenes at a stepped dam and architectural views of Colombo and Kandy, including temples, riverbanks, and the harbor. Also shown are scenes of daily life, such as villagers in front of a thatched house, a mahout with his elephant, and carts passing beneath towering banyan trees. – Some fading, especially around the edges, some scuff marks and handling creases, small tear on mount of one print, otherwise all in good condition.
