Views of Egypt. 1860s. 26 albumen prints, mounted to board. Each ca. 26 x 38 cm or reverse (41,5 x 51,5 cm). Each with photographer’s signature in the negative in lower margin and handwritten caption on label below the image on the mount. Presented in canvas clamshell box.

This group of photographs by Antonio Beato offers a representative survey of his early work in Egypt during the 1860s. The images encompass major archaeological and monumental sites along the Nile Valley, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the Temple of Karnak, Medinet Habu, Philae, the Colossi of Memnon, and the rock temples of Abu Simbel. Notably, the selection also features rare views of lesser-photographed locations such as Qurna and detailed studies of sculptural reliefs. Marked by their careful composition, deep tonal richness, and atmospheric clarity, Beato’s photographs stand among the most enduring visual documents of Egypt’s ancient architecture in the 19th century. – Some buckling of the mounts; scuff marks and traces of writing from the verso faintly visible through the recto. Otherwise, all in good to very good condition.
