Los 4185 - German Colonies/Africa - Photo documentation of the Dernburg-Reise to the German colonies in East Africa

Photographer unknown. Photo documentation of the "Dernburg-Reise" to the German colonies in Africa. 1907/08. Circa 300 collodion paper prints. Each circa 13 x 19 cm. Compiled in 3 separate albums (Chinese book binding, edges slightly rubbed), each photograph numbered with 2 additional original handwritten lists of corresponding numbers and titles.

The three photo albums offered here were taken during State Secretary Bernhard Dernburg's (1865-1937) journey through the German colonies in 1907/8, which led to a fundamental correction of German colonial policy. Dernburg initiated numerous disciplinary proceedings, called powerful and notorious colonial officials such as Governor Jesko von Puttkamer to account, and dismissed older officials for the new start. As the first senior colonial official of this rank, he also looked at the problems in the colonies on site. The over 300 images show Dernburg and his company travelling by ship, train, car, on horseback and on foot on the journey across Africa. The comprehensive handwritten list explaining all the photos is an important historical document. – Some prints with light surface scuff marks, some with light edge wear, otherwise most in very good condition with strong contrasts.
