"Atop the Berlin Reichstag, May 2, 1945". 1945/printed later. Gelatin silver print. 30,5 x 41 cm. Signed by the photographer in pencil on the verso.

An interesting document, which Chaldej himself commented on: "Early in the morning on May 2, 1945, I entered it (the Reichstag). I was surrounded by horrendous noise, Russians and Germans were all shouting in horrible confusion ... A pleasant young soldier came up to me. I had a red flag in my hand. He said, 'Lieutenant, davai, let's hurry up and climb onto the roof with the flag' ... We started out, but all the stairs were badly damaged. When we finally got up the Reichstag was on fire. ...We found a long pole. I spent lots of time trying out different compositions. I took one picture from the left, but that wasn't any good. I wanted Berlin to be clearly visible in the picture. Then I said, 'Boys, go and stand over there and raise the flag ... then try over there'. There were three of them. One was from the Ukraine, the other from Machatshkala in Dagestan and the third was a Russian. ... I shot a whole roll of film, 36 shots." (cited in Volland/Krimmer, p. 151). – In excellent condition.

Photographer unknown. Opening of the "Erste Internationale Dada-Messe" (First International Dada Fair) held at the Otto Burchard Gallery, Berlin. 1920. Vintage gelatin silver print. 12 x 16,5 cm. Photothek agency stamp and typed French press text label: Exposition d'art des "Dadaistes" à Berlin, vue generale de l'exposition on the verso.

Only a few photographic documents exist today of the International Dada Fair, which opened in Berlin in June 1920. Nonetheless, they succeeded to etch their way into the historic cultural memory. The spectacular show took place at the Kunsthandlung Dr. Otto Burchard, Lützowufer 13. The photo offered here shows the following visitors: from left to right Raoul Hausmann, Hanna Höch, Dr. Burchard, Johannes Baader, Wieland Herzfelde and his wife, Dr. Oz, George Grosz, John Heartfield. On the far left the now missing painting "Kriegskrüppel" by Otto Dix is seen (see also lot 4264). A figure in military uniform with a pig mask dangles from the ceiling, which involved Otto Burchard in a lawsuit. A total of circa 200 exhibits hung on the walls, including printed Dada slogans such as "Nieder die Kunst!" (Down with art!) and "Dada ist die willentliche Zersetzung der bürgerlichen Begriffswelt" (Dada is the willful destruction of the bourgeois conceptual world). – Faded, some buckling from glue on verso, some mirroring in edges/corners, otherwise in good condition.

Photothek agency stamp and typed French press text label: Exposition d'art des "Dadaistes" à Berlin, "la grandeur et la décadance de l'Allemagne" architecture monumentale dadaiste de Johannes Baader on the verso.

This photo document is a particularly rare specimen. Only very few prints exist. The creator of this unusual installation was the eccentric Johannes Baader, who later also organized Dada exhibition tours with Richard Hülsenbeck. Some press photos, like this and the previous photo were sent to Paris at the time to promote the Berlin event there as well. Despite the French inscription on the verso of each photo, it is not known whether these photos were published in France at the time. – Faded, some buckling from glue on verso, some mirroring in edges/corners, otherwise in good condition.

"Santo volto del Divin Redentore" (Detail of the Shroud of Turin - negative). 1931. Vintage gelatin silver print. 29 x 23 cm. Photographer's and reproduction limitation blindstamp in lower left/right corners, mounted to original board (corners bumped, small loss in upper left corner), with title and date printed above/below the image on the mount (41,5 x 31,5 cm).

The Shroud of Turin is believed to bear the imprint of the face and wounds of Christ. The first historical record of the Shroud goes back to the 15th century when it was given to the House of Savoy by a French noblewoman. Since the 17th century, it has been housed in a chapel connected to Turin’s cathedral. The first photograph of the Shroud was made during its public display in 1898 by the amateur photographer Secondo Pia. Because that photograph was produced with the Shroud under its protective glass, its use as evidence was increasingly questioned. Thus, when the Shroud was displayed publicly in 1931, in honor of the wedding of Umberto II to the Belgian princess Maria José, a new set of photographs was commissioned.
Accompanied by a French scientist, a priest and Secondo Pia, Enrie made twelve negatives of the Shroud. He recorded his methodology in great detail, which was published in 1933. Enrie’s photographs of the Shroud were widely distributed. The print offered here includes its original mount, which features printed signatures and insignia of church officials, attesting to the official sanction of the image. – A few scuff/scratch marks in upper left as well as light silvering in edges, more visible at an angle, one stronger dent to left of face, retouched spot in upper right corner, otherwise in very good condition.
