Photographer: S.P. Christmann. Images of the Berlin Aquarium.1869/70. 12 vintage albumen prints with rounded corners. Each circa 17 x 23 cm. Each mounted to board, title and photographer's name printed below the images on the mount, in original cloth portfolio with gilt-stamped title Berlin, Photographies, Aquarium (time-stained in edges, some damage to back cover).

This extremely rare portfolio, which is believed to be the only extant copy, was probably offered for sale in only a few copies on the day of the opening, May 11, 1869. It was likely aimed at mainly English and French tourists, as indicated by the multilingual typographical information. Images of the aquarium also exist as stereo views by Christmann, which were more commercially interesting. Only stereo views can be found in various museums. – Photos in very good condition. With: Arrival of the African rhinoceros "Drucy" and the dead female Indian rhinoceros at the Frankfurt Zoo, August 24, 1909. 2 vintage gelatin silver prints. Each circa 16 x 22 cm. Each mounted to board and with caption label below image on mount.- Mounts with traces of use, photos with some silvering in edges.
