Private photos of Käthe Kollwitz and the plaster model of "Zwei wartende Soldatenfrauen"
Los 4229 [*]

Ergebnis (inkl. Aufgeld) *
2.728€ (US$ 2,933)

Details

Private photos of the last year of artist Käthe Kollwitz in Nordhausen (10) and various images of the plaster model of "Zwei wartende Soldatenfrauen". Circa 1944. 30 vintage gelatin silver prints. Various sizes 12 x 9 cm, 23 x 18 cm and 10 x 14 cm (portraits). Some annotated in pencil/ink on the verso, inserted in album slits in contemporary album.

When the bombing of Berlin became increasingly frequent, Käthe Kollwitz followed an invitation of the sculptor Margret Böning to Nordhausen/Thuringia in August 1943. On November 23, the Berlin apartment, in which the artist had lived for 51 years, was destroyed in an air raid. Before that, Margret Böning and Clara Stern managed to bring a large number of her graphic works to Nordhausen. However, many of her early paintings and drawings could not be saved and were almost all destroyed. The photographs in this album were all taken during her short stay in Nordhausen. Among them are various images of her last plaster model "Zwei wartende Soldatenfrauen" (Two waiting soldiers' wives). On one photo Käthe Kollwitz can be seen with Margret Böning, and other pictures show her in conversation with her daughter-in-law Ottilie and her sister Lisbeth Stern. These photographs are among the last made of Käthe Kollwitz and are very rare. She spent her last days at the so-called "Rüdenhof'' in Moritzburg castle, near Dresden.

– Most photos in very good condition.
