Photographer: Léon Alfred Vassel (active 1883-1897) and unknown. Interior views of the Galerie Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin and portrait of Fritz Gurlitt. Circa 1905. 6 collodion paper prints. Each circa 22,5 x 16,5 cm (5) and 14 x 9,8 cm (1). Each mounted to board, with printed caption below image on mount, 5 with publisher's stamp August Scherl on mount verso.
Fritz Gurlitt was interested in both the paintings of the French Impressionists and in those of the German plein air painters, for whose promotion he was committed. In the fall of 1883, Gurlitt presented an exhibition of French Impressionists for the first time in Germany. The exhibition included works by Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and Claude Monet, the novelty of which the Berlin public initially had to grow accustomed to. In 1899, circa six years after Gurlitt's death, however, exhibition activity slackened and came to a complete standstill between 1902 and 1904. When it resumed in 1905, the new location was 113 Potsdamerstrasse, which the photographs offered here likely show. – Some surface rubbing, otherwise in very good condition.
