Photographer: Edition Alinari. Views of the excavation of the Forum Romanum. 1890s/1900. 7 albumen prints. Each circa 20 x 25 cm. Each titled and numbered and with photographer's name in the negative in lower edge.

A very interesting and rare documentation of the late excavation phase of the Roman Forum under the direction of archaeologist Giacomo Boni (since 1898). Boni was a pioneer of modern historic preservation, who learned his craft early on from John Ruskin in Venice. All ancient artifacts, including those of the Middle Ages, were meticulously documented in drawings and photographs for the first time. During this period, the Basilica of Aemilia, the Temple of Vesta, the Juturna Well and many others were uncovered. – Edges curled, some handling marks, otherwise strong prints in very good condition.

Details

Photographer unknown. Portrait of woman with child of Tierra del Fuego archipelago; Group portraits of indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Early 1880s. 3 albumen prints, 2 mounted to cabinet board. 13 x 9 cm and 10 x 15 cm. Each annotated in pencil on verso.

These are rare photographic documents of the indigenous Tierra del Fuego people, now completely extinct. These people were extraordinarily hardy and tough inhabitants of the most inhospitable and southern places on earth. Around 1880, a small group of these people was brought to Hamburg by a captain of a merchant ship and sold to the animal trader Carl Hagenbeck. During this time, Hagenbeck toured Europe and regularly showed these and other indigenous groups in so-called 'Völkerschauen' (human zoos). In the Paris Jardin d'Acclimatation Antropologique, where the show attracted more than half a million spectators, similar photos, as this one (woman with child) were offered for sale to the interested public on such occasions. A similar photo by Pierre Petit is in Ethnologisches Museum Berlin (inventory no. CCBY-NC-SA). In 1982, "Die Wilden von den Feuerlandinseln" (The Wild Ones of the Tierra del Fuego Islands) were brought to Zurich to entertain the crowds at the sold-out Plattentheater am Zürichberg. The unfortunate people continued to be exploited despite increasing exhaustion until they died one by one soon after. The woman in the portrait offered here was a member of this group. She died already on the way to Zurich (her body, as well as those of the other indigenous people, was brought to the anatomical dept. of the University of Zurich). In 2010, after long negotiations, the university handed over the remains of the Tierra del Fuego people to a Chilean delegation of various indigenous people so that they could make their final journey. – A few surface scuff marks/scratches, otherwise in very good condition.
