Private souvenir album, probably of a German weapons dealer travelling in China. Circa 1900-1906. Circa 200 vintage collodion paper prints. Various sizes between 7 x 10 cm and 21 x 26 cm. Mounted to album boards, bound as leporello in black lacquer Japanese album (chipped in edges/corners, crack on back cover) with genre motif inlay (some pieces missing).
Apart from weapon demonstrations for high ranking Chinese officials (large-format photographs), the images show the arrival of German soldiers at the Peking train station as well as harbor scenes, street life in cities, temples, villages and landscapes in China. A small group shows destroyed Russian warships from the Russo-Japanese War and one shows a small Japanese submarine. – Some prints with light surface rubbing/buckling, some faded, some with oxidation mirroring in edges, otherwise many in good condition.

The Second Sino-Japanese War was a military conflict fought primarily between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan from July 7, 1937 - September 2, 1945. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, when the USA entered the war, it was a scene of the Pacific War and thus part of the Second World War. – Some with traces of use, otherwise in good condition.

Mounted to gilt-flecked board (warped, time stained in edges, some soiled), most with title and number on printed label affixed below image on the mount.
This group includes the following numbers and titles: " No. 851, The Observatory Pekin"; "No. 862, A Pekin Cart"; "No. 863, 867, 870, 920, 922, Pekin" including views of the German Legation, and British Legation containing the French, German and Belgian Legations as well as "No. 925, Foreign Ministers, Pekin" showing George Seward (USA), Max von Brand (Germany), Federico Elmore (Peru), Sir Thomas Francis Wade (Britain) and Jevgenij Bützow (Russia).

Many images show the important visit of Prince Heinrich of Prussia in Hankou and other cities in 1899. Includes large views of historic monuments, landscapes, harbor scenes and city views as well as military barracks and staff and members of the German settlement in Hankou. – Some photos with surface damage/scuff marks, some buckling from mounting, otherwise most in good to very good condition.

A group of fascinating images taken in China. Together with his wife Ursula, the scientist and photographer Elmar Schulze took a trip to China in 1978. Due to his connections, apart from Peking, they were also able to travel to the province of Shanxi (Lin region) where they visited several people's communes, villages and schools. This portfolio contains exceptional, rare and beautiful Kodak color images of China shortly after the end of the Cultural Revolution. – In excellent condition and with strong colors.
