In 1923 Lis Beyer-Volger started studying at the Bauhaus in Weimar. She took classes with Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Under Georg Muche she attended the weaving workshop. In 1925, she went to Bauhaus Dessau. She also took part in artistic activities at the Bauhaus such as singing, dancing and making costumes for Oskar Schlemmer's theater pieces as well as the Bauhaus festivities. She also often posed as a model for Bauhaus photographers such as T. Lux Feininger and Margit Kallin. In 1932, she married the artist and architect Hans Volger. – Traces of previous mounting on verso, otherwise in very good condition.

In 1931 fifteen representatives of the NSDAP were elected to the Dessau city parliament (total of 36 seats). In a session of January 21,1932 the National Socialists demanded the demolition of the Bauhaus building. Fortunately this was prevented. As previously in Weimar, starting in 1927 Walter Gropius once again had to fight for the political survival of his school in Dessau. In September 1932 the Bauhaus Dessau was permanently closed by the Nazi dominated parliament. This rare photographic document with its original press label marks a dramatic turning point in cultural history. This and other press photos were distributed around the world in 1932 and illustrated the spectacular news of the closure of the Bauhaus in Dessau. The press text on the verso reads: Schliessung des Dessauer Bauhauses beschlossen. Der Dessauer Gemeinderat stimmte dem nationalsozialistischen Antrag zu, das Bauhaus, die Ausbildungsstätte für Architektur und Einrichtungskunst, zum 1. Oktober 1932 zu schliessen. Most circa 12 x 17 cm and smaller. Several annotated in pencil and some with photographer's stamp on the verso.

This small group of early vintage photographs are rare documents of the White City, Tel Aviv. They show the original state of the modern architecture there, which has often been changed or has since disappeared completely. Unfortunately only some of the original buildings of the 1930s/1940s remain today. However, the surviving buildings were declared a cultural treasure and UNESCO added the White City to the World Heritage List in 2003. – Some with light traces of use, otherwise in very good condition.
