Photographer: probably Emile Gsell (1838-1879). View of Phnom Penh at the bay of Tonle Sap river. Circa 1866. Albumen print. 22,3 x 31 cm. Mounted to board (slight traces of use and soiled), annotated in pencil below the image on the mount.

The French photographer Emile Gsell worked in southeast Asia and was the first photographer to be based in Saigon. He participated in at least three scientific expeditions and his images of Angkor Wat are some of the earliest of that site. Under pressure of the French, King Norodon I moved his government's seat from Udom to Phnom Penh. This rare view was probably taken shortly after this move in 1866, as it still shows a simple settlement of bamboo huts with the famous Wat Phnom Pagoda in the background from which the town takes its name. After the move of the King the French began to rebuild the city and took Phnom Phenh as the seat of colonial administration. – Three vertical fold marks, small tear in right edge, glued through mounting, a few light foxing spots in sky area, otherwise a rich dark print in good condition.

Details

Portraits of the Leipzig merchant Carl Lampe (1804-1889) and his wife. Early 1850s. 2 salt prints from wet-plate collodion negatives. Each circa 18,5 x 14,2 cm. Each mounted to board, both with photographer's paper label on mount verso, male portrait numbered and annotated in blue crayon on the verso.

Bertha Beckmann was born on January 25, 1815 in Cottbus. From 1839 until 1843, she worked for a jeweller in Dresden. But already in 1824, she was working on the side with photography, making daguerreotypes. In 1843, she became a student of Wilhelm Horn, who had opened a studio in Prague in 1841. Her early work with Horn makes her the first woman photographer in the world. In 1845, she married the Leipzig photographer, Eduard Wehnert. He unfortunately died two years later. The two portraits offered here were probably made soon after her return to Leipzig, because since at this early date she was already advertising photographs based on the collodion process. In 1854, she took part in the German Industrial Exhibition in Munich and showed only salt paper prints. From this year on, all references to daguerreotypes were dropped from her studio label. She actively used her Leipzig studio until 1883. Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann died December 6, 1901 in Leipzig.
The Leipzig merchant Carl Lampe was one of the city's wealthiest and most respected citizens in the 19th century. He was a city councilor in Leipzig from 1834-1838 and a member of the Masonic lodge Minerva. In 1835, he was a co-founder of the Leipzig-Dresden Railway Company and a member of the board of directors. Lampe was a founder and member of many more charitable organizations and associations, however, his greatest merit was in the cultural sector. In November 1836, fifteen Leipzig citizens met in his house and founded the later famous Leipzig Art Society. The purpose of this association was the later establishment of a municipal art museum. – Both photos in excellent condition with a rich violet-brown tone.

Lit.: Jochen Voigt. A German Lady. Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann. Leben & Werk einer Fotografiepionierin, Chemnitz 2014, ill. pp. 352-354. In this extensive monograph, the portrait still appears on page 352 as "unknown". Unfortunately, Prof. Voigt was only able to identify Carl Lampe after his book had been printed.

Details

Woman sitting in garden. Circa 1900. Autochrome. 11 x 8 cm (20 x 16 cm). With original frame with printed address A. Lumière & Sesfils-Lyon., r. Dechavammes, Paris.

According to Gordon Baldwin, autochromes were the first "really practicable photographs in color" and were made by a process invented and patented by Louis Lumière in 1904. A glass plate was coated with a varnish on which tiny grains of potato starch (first dyed red-orange, blue-violet and green) were randomly distributed in equal ratio, forming a dense mosaic color filter on the plate. Another coating of varnish and finally a gelatin-bromide emulsion, which was orthochromatic, was added over the layer of potato starch. The starch grain mosaic filtered the light so the bromide emulsion was selectively exposed by color. After being exposed the plates were developed and washed. These negatives were then placed in a chemical bath to bleach out the negative impression, and after exposure to white light the plates were redeveloped, resulting in a positive colored impression that was fixed, washed and varnished a final time. Each autochrome is a unique object, and although the photographer is unknown, their vibrant colors and often poetic composition are impressive. – Some craquelure in upper right corner, colors partly faded, otherwise in good condition.

Berlin im Licht
Views of buildings illuminated for 'Berlin im Licht'
Los 4097

Ergebnis (inkl. Aufgeld) *
34.720€ (US$ 37,333)

Details

Photographer: Martin Höhlig (1882-1948). Views of buildings and locations in Berlin illuminated for the project Berlin im Licht. 1928. 100 vintage, ferrotyped gelatin silver prints on ivory paper. Each circa 22,5 x 16,5 cm and 16,5 x 22,5 cm. Some with number in lower right corner in the negative, inserted in album pages (slight toning in edges), bound in original emerald green cloth presentation album (edges slightly rubbed) with gilt-stamped title Berlin im Licht (25,5 x 35 cm).

From October 13-16, 1928, together with various business organizations and the lighting industry (AEG, Siemens & Halske, Osram), the city of Berlin initiated a visionary propaganda campaign for electric light advertising and illumination of the city under the slogan Berlin im Licht (Berlin Alight). It was a sensation throughout Germany and a spectacular tribute to modern city life. Kurt Weill was even asked to compose a song entitled "Berlin im Licht" for the occasion.
Already in the early 1920s, the designer Walter Dexel had developed the first fluorescent light for advertising purposes. As of 1926 he worked in Frankfurt and designed light advertising to unify facades and create harmony between architecture and advertising. He also used larger designs on facades and on rooftops, as well as illuminated phone booths and columns. There was a clear trend in using light in advertising and architecture.
A group of more than one hundred night views, which are a brilliant testimony to the New Vision in photography of the time, as well as urban and architectural photography, was taken to document the Berlin im Licht event. The collection offered here contains a complete series and in its entirety constitutes a very rare and important part of photographic history. Only a few complete albums remain intact with a series of one hundred photographs each to illustrate the Berlin im Licht project. One is in the collection of the Stadtmuseum Berlin, which was exhibited in 2008 and contains many of the photographs offered here. This group presents a comprehensive overview of all locations involved in the project, among them many modern buildings designed by renowned architects.
The buildings include department stores such as Kaufhaus des Westens ("KaDeWe") and the silk store Michels & Cie., Kurfürstendamm (both designed by Johann Emil Schaudt); the main store of Michels & Cie., Leipziger Straße; the fur store C.A. Herpich & Söhne, Leipziger Straße (Erich Mendelsohn) as well as different branch offices of Hermann Tietz ("Hertie").
A selection of images, which strongly follow the new objectivity aesthetic in photography, depict various retail stores, window shop displays, illuminated advertising columns such as the Berlin im Licht column at Großer Stern, which advertised the event (see p. 96), the Persil column at Potsdamer Platz, as well as brightly lit exterior advertising billboards.
In addition, this collection contains a series of striking images depicting modern cinemas such as: Ufa-Pavillon, Nollendorfplatz (Oskar Kaufmann); Ufa-Palast, Hardenbergstr. and the Titania-Palast, Steglitz (Schoffler, Schlönbach & Jacobi). Hotels are also included, such as the Excelsior, Anhalter Bahnhof (Otto Rehnig) as well as places of public entertainment, such as Potsdamer Platz with Haus Vaterland (Franz Schwechten) and the Columbia Tanz-Cabaret.
The present collection of photographs not only gives a wonderful impression of Berlin at night in the 1920s, but also documents a historical era of Berlin enterprise, especially in the images of department stores and retail stores of Jewish owners, such as the silk store Michels & Cie., the textile shop Hermann Gerson and the luggage, leather and luxury item shop of Albert Rosenhain. These shops were soon closed in the 1930s or "aryanized" and their owners were either deported or forced to emigrate. – All photographs with pressure marks in corners from album slits, some with silver mirroring in edges and corners, some with light handling marks/creases, otherwise most in good to very good condition.
