Photographer unknown. Portrait of indigenous man (1), group portraits of indigenous people (4), group portrait of missionaries (1) and a religious ceremony (1). 1870s/90s. 7 albumen prints, 1 mounted to board. Circa 10 x 15 cm. Each annotated in pencil on the verso.
The classification of the indigenous groups that lived in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego is almost impossible today because of their extensive annihilation or mixing with invading peoples. As early as the 19th century, the intrusion of the Mapuches or Araucanians from the west and north led to a profound change in their cultural reality. The contacts with Europeans and their diseases, the intrusion of Christian missionaries, as well as the subsequent conquest of the desert by the Argentine army eventually led to the almost total extinction of many of these indigenous communities. The photographs offered here therefore offer rare documentation of their culture. – Some with light creases, otherwise most in very good condition and many with strong contrasts.
