The photograph offered here is a rare example of the beginning of August Sander's artistic and professional career. After travelling as a photographic apprentice to Berlin, Magdeburg, Halle, Leipzig and Dresden, in 1901 Sander worked in the Greif photographic studio in Linz. Together with Franz Stukenberg he took over the Greif photographic studio in 1902, renaming it Sander & Stukenberg. This photograph is from the period when August Sander parted with his business partner Stukenberg and ran the studio on his own. – Some light surface scuff marks, rertouched scratch in upper right, otherwise in very good condition.

Born in Berlin in 1919, Marli Shamir studied at the art school Contempora Lehrateliers affiliated with the Bauhaus. She emigrated to Palestine via Sweden in 1937 and arrived in Palestine in October 1938. In 1945 she opened her own photographic studio in Jerusalem where she had great success portraying children. One of the main topics of her photography is the land and the abstractions made by light and shadow. In 1951 she received the first prize for landscape photography from Bezalel University. In 1953 she married the diplomat Meir Ahmir and travelled extensively. She has had solo exhibitions at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and the Grand Palais, Paris as well as group exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the British Museum, London. She lives and still photographs in Jerusalem. – Slight edge wear, corners bumped, a few small retouched spots, a few minimal surface scuffs, otherwise in good condition.

Between 1929-1931 Elsa Thiemann studied at the Bauhaus Dessau. Among her teachers were Josef Albers, Joost Schmidt and most importantly Walter Peterhans for photography. The New Objectivity movement and the emphasis on advertising photography in the classroom greatly influenced Thiemann. The concern for structure and innovative composition evident in her work, originated here. She also met her future husband, the painter Hans Thiemann, at the Bauhaus in 1930. She returned to Berlin in 1931 and worked as a freelance press photographer until 1960 when they moved to Hamburg. – Stronger crease in right edge (emulsion cracked), edges slightly curled, a few light handling marks, otherwise a fine tonal print in very good condition.

Already after the heavy fighting in the winter of 1941/42 the Wehrmacht suffered heavy losses and due to the following encirclement battles masses of prisoners went to the Soviet Union. In 1944 the German prisoners of war were led in a legendary march through Moscow to humiliate them and show them to the Russian people. – Both with handling creases, a few corners slightly bumped, tape residue and slightly soiled on the verso, otherwise in good condition.

Zuber was one of the founders of Neue Sachlichkeit photography in France and he was particularily influenced by Renger-Patzsch's photographs. In 1927 he studied for two semesters in Leipzig at the Hochschule für grafische Kunst und Buchwesen. He exhibited his work for the first time in the Film und Foto exhibition in 1929, in Stuttgart. – A few light handling marks, otherwise in very good condition.
