The Apollino statue, Florence. Circa 1854. Large-format, gold-toned, lightly coated salt print. 33 x 25 cm. Number 25 in lower right corner in the negative, mounted to card (some foxing), photographer's Fratelli Alinari, Fotografi Firenze, Presso Luigi Bardo blindstamp below the image on the mount.

The Apollino or Medici Apollo is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture of the youthful god Apollo. It is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Unlike many other antique sculptures in the Medici collection, it was not brought to Florence by Cosimo III de' Medici, but remained in Rome. Although it has since lost some of its prestige, it was praised as one of the most copied Roman sculptures until the 18th century. It was seen in the Tribuna of the Uffizi by the English poet Percy B. Shelley who commented on it: "It is difficult to imagine anything more beautiful than Ganymede; but the spirit-like lightness, the softness, the flowing perfection of the forms [of Apollino] surpass him. The countenance, though exceedingly sweet and gentle, is not divine. There is a feminine liveliness with which one gains passive happiness, and yet there is a boyish inexperience which is exceedingly attractive. An attitude to life seems to flow through the limbs, giving them lightness. Nothing can be completely more beautiful than the legs and the union of the feet with the ankles and the fading of the foot lines down to the tender extremities. It is like a spirit even in a dream. The neck is long and yet full and supports the head with its luxuriant and knotted hair, as if it did not need to be supported." – A few light surface smudges, otherwise a rich dark print in very good condition.

Von Hordt'sche Palais, Wilhelmstraße 70, Berlin. Circa 1859. 2 salt prints with rounded corners. 16,5 x 20,3 cm and 20,6 x 16,1 cm. Each mounted to board (soiled in edges).

Leopold Ahrendts worked first as a painter and lithographer in Dessau before moving to Berlin circa 1850, where he presented lithographs at the Academy of the Arts exhibition that same year. In 1856 he began working in the studio of the court photographer Philipp Graff. He exhibited his first photographs under the name of the Graff studio. Shortly thereafter he began signing his photos with his own name. Ahrendts is undoubtedly one of the most important early German photographers who combined high technical standards and artful composition in his photographs.
Between 1818-1834 the "von Hordtsche Palais" was the Berlin residence of Ernst August (1771-1851), King of Hanover (1837-1851), 1st Duke of Cumberland. Ernst August was married to Frederike von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the sister of Queen Luise of Prussia. The son of Ernst August, later King George V, spent most of his childhood in this residence. The house existed in the state shown in this image until 1868, when the ‘railway king’ Bethel Henry Strousberg had the beautiful palace demolished and replaced by an imposing new building. In 1876 it was rented by the United Kingdom and from 1884 it served as the British Embassy. – One print with some light retouching in lower area, otherwise in very good condition with strong tones.

Photographer: probably Emile Gsell (1838-1879). View of Phnom Penh at the bay of Tonle Sap river. Circa 1866. Albumen print. 21 x 32,3 cm. Mounted to board (slight traces of use and soiled), annotated in blue crayon below the image on the mount.

The French photographer Emile Gsell worked in southeast Asia and was the first photographer to be based in Saigon. He participated in at least three scientific expeditions and his images of Angkor Wat are some of the earliest of that site. Under pressure of the French, King Norodon I moved his government's seat from Udom to Phnom Penh. This rare view was probably taken shortly after this move in 1866, as it still shows a simple settlement of bamboo huts with the famous Wat Phnom Pagoda in the background from which the town takes its name. After the move of the King the French began to rebuild the city and took Phnom Phenh as the seat of colonial administration. – A few light surface scuff marks, slight stain in upper left corner, otherwise a rich dark print in very good condition.
