Photographer: Florence Conrad. Portrait of the photographer Adolf Fassbender (1884-1980). 1920s. Vintage large-format gelatin silver print. 35 x 28 cm.
Adolf "Papa" Fassbender began his photographic career in 1897 as an apprentice. He moved to America in 1912 and worked for the Selby Sisters Studio and then for Pirie McDonald, New York's famed society photographer. He operated his own studio for five years and photographed in the pictorialist style and eventually began teaching as well. His influence also reached overseas where he received many honorary awards. – Traces of glue from previous mounting on the verso, otherwise a rich dark, tonal print in very good condition.
