Lotte. 1928. Vintage, large-format unique ferrotyped gelatin silver print. 40 x 30,5 cm.

Born in 1887, Max Buchartz studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Elberfeld and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He moved to Weimar in 1921 and in 1926 was appointed professor at the Folkwangschule where he worked until 1933 teaching graphic design, typography and photography.
Burchartz photographed this engaging image of his daughter Lotte during the same shooting when he took the famous image he later cropped as a close up of her eye entitled "Lotte (Auge)", which was included in the Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart 1929, and two years later in 1931, it was used as an enlarged mural at the entrance to the exhibition Das Lichtbild in Essen. It is now an icon of modern photography. This is a unique print and there are no existing negatives of this image.
[see comparable illustration of "Lotte (Auge)"] – Two professionally repaired tears, some handling creases, otherwise a fine tonal print.

"Atop the Berlin Reichstag, May 2, 1945". 1945/printed later. Gelatin silver print. 30,3 x 39,5 cm. Signed by the photographer in pencil on the verso.

An interesting document, which Chaldej himself commented on: "Early in the morning on May 2, 1945, I entered it (the Reichstag). I was surrounded by horrendous noise, Russians and Germans were all shouting in horrible confusion ... A pleasant young soldier came up to me. I had a red flag in my hand. He said, 'Lieutenant, davai, let's hurry up and climb onto the roof with the flag' ... We started out, but all the stairs were badly damaged. When we finally got up the Reichstag was on fire. ...We found a long pole. I spent lots of time trying out different compositions. I took one picture from the left, but that wasn't any good. I wanted Berlin to be clearly visible in the picture. Then I said, 'Boys, go and stand over there and raise the flag ... then try over there'. There were three of them. One was from the Ukraine, the other from Machatshkala in Dagestan and the third was a Russian. ... I shot a whole roll of film, 36 shots." (cited in Volland/Krimmer, p. 151). – In excellent condition.

5.208€ (US$ 5,600)

Details

Private souvenir album of a German officer stationed in China. Circa 1911-1913. Circa 124 vintage collodion paper prints. Each circa 11,5 x 15,5 cm and reverse. Mounted to album boards (time-stained in edges), annotated in German in ink on album boards, bound in Japanese black lacquer album (some chips, spine missing) with painted genre scene on front cover, inside fly leaves with hand-painted Japanese genre scene and handwritten dedication in ink dated 1913 and signed Retzlaff.

Highly interesting album compiled by a high ranking German officer circa 1911-1913. The images include some rare photos of monuments and temples including the famous Treaty Temple, Tsingtau train station, pagodas, opium smokers, an old mill, religious figures near the Ming tombs, Chinese beauties, harbor scenes with war ships and daily rural life. Also includes street views of Tsingtau and panoramic views of Hong Kong and Port Arthur. The album also includes a group photograph of Prince Heinrich together with other Chinese high ranking officials. Prince Heinrich of Prussia, the Emperor's brother, had participated in the stationing of German protection troops after the original occupation of Kiauchou in 1897 under the leadership of Admiral von Diederichs. In this album he is seen visiting the region a year before the outbreak of World War I and the subsequent capture of Kiautschou by the Japanese. The armored cruiser "Gneisenau", which Heinrich travelled to China on, is also shown. The dedication on front flyleaf reads: Für hervorragende Leistungen beim Preisschießen am 3.1. 1913, drei Schuß, liegend freihändig, 150 m, 24 Ringscheibe, 68 Ringe.

"Le rire" (Female nude with skull). Circa 1913. Vintage warm-toned bromoil print on Japan. 25,9 x 31,4 cm. Signed by the photographer in pencil in lower right in margin.

At the beginning of the century, Frantisek Drtikol was also part of the international pictorialist movement. During this period, he created a number of photographs using very elaborate techniques, such as this two-color oil pigment print on thin Japanese paper. His artistic ideas are already evident here. From this point on, he often combines female nudes in expressive gestures and movements with dramatic lighting effects. With this image, he also managed to transform a relatively simple subject into a dynamic and at the same time humorous gesture.

The Pictorialists and portraitists around the turn of the century often used hand-pulled photogravures because of their fine rendition. Hugo Erfurth often produced pigment prints, giving his work an almost painterly quality. This photogravure follows that aesthetic. – A fine tonal print in very good condition.

Photographer: Don English (1901-1964), art direction: Josef von Sternberg. Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) as Concha Perez in "The Devil is a Woman". 1935. Oversized vintage gelatin silver print. 35,4 x 28 cm. Annotated in pencil on the verso.

"The Devil is a Woman" is the last film in which Dietrich worked together with von Sternberg who so successfully photographed and molded her image. Some critics have pointed to the parallels between the Sternberg/Dietrich relationship and the Don Pasqual (Lionel Atwill)/Concha Perez (Dietrich) relationship in the film. The film and publicity stills show the trademark qualities of the Sternberg/Dietrich collaboration: extraordinary attention to lighting, costume and art direction. – Corners bumped, creases in corners, some stronger in lower right, a few handling marks in upper and lower right, some spots of surface glue residue, only visible at an angle, otherwise a fine tonal print in good condition.
