Details

Untitled (The Lovers). 1990/printed 1992. Large-format Polaroid print. 86 x 56 cm. Signed, dated and dedicated by the artist in ink in margin lower right.

In 1983, the partners Marina Abramović and Ulay announced their ultimate collaboration: "The Lovers". They proposed to be the first people to walk the Great Wall of China. Setting off alone from opposite ends, they planned to meet in the middle, where they would marry. Exhilarated by the emotional and physical scale of "The Lovers", the pair imagined themselves walking alone across great expanses of the Chinese landscape, camping under the stars and concluding the journey with the ultimate commitment. They saw "The Lovers" as an odyssey and a performance in which they alone would be both players and audience.
In 1986, they went to China to visit parts of the Great Wall, to familiarise themselves with it and meet some of the villagers they would be staying with. Permission was finally granted for the walk to take place the following year. Then, the authorities postponed it again. By that time the artists had decided to separate as partners but still carried out the project. Abramović and Ulay began their walks on March 30, 1988, from either end of the Great Wall, known to the Chinese as 'The Sleeping Dragon'. This image shows Ulay's translator with a symbol of the project. – Tear in right edge near lower corner (circa 2 cm), otherwise in very good condition.

Details

View of the Erasmuskapelle in the Berlin Stadtschloß. Late 1920s. Vintage warm-toned gelatin silver print on chamois paper. 21,5 x 16,2 cm. Mounted to board, annotated in pencil on the verso.

The Erasmus chapel from the time of Elector Frederick II of Brandenburg (1413-1471) has always belonged to the oldest part of the Berlin Palace. Under Frederick the Great, the chapel was heavily modified in 1742 and divided into two floors. This created a relatively low room under the vault, which served Frederick William IV as an apartment from about 1824. The photograph offered here represents the state in the 1920s, when the palace, as well as the chapel, were already a museum. – A rich tonal print in excellent condition.

Details

(Attributed to). The Swiss musical clown performer Grock (Charles Adrien Wettach, 1880-1959). Circa 1936/37. Vintage gelatin silver print on chamois paper. 14,2 x 9 cm. Signed by the photographer in ink in lower right corner; annotated in pencil/red crayon on the verso.

After a touring career in Europe and overseas that began before WWI, Grock returned to Berlin for the first time in 1924. He added a second costume to his original one with oversized plaid pants, jacket, shoes and matching cap. In 1925, he performed in Paris for over eight months. After touring South America, he traveled to Italy with his own troupe in 1928 and performed again in Paris in 1929/30. Even after that, various occasions often took him back to Paris. Between circa 1936 and 1939, the photographer Wols also worked in Paris and maintained close friendly contacts with actors, writers and artists. If the portrait offered here is indeed by Wols, it was probably taken during this period, as he only began using the pseudonym "Wols" circa 1937. However, the signature is somewhat unusual: "f. Wols Paris ..." (f.=foto?) . This photograph is originally from a German collection of various portraits of actors from the 1940s. – Minimal nicks in edges, otherwise in very good condition.
