Immagine Principale Descrizione Stato
Ahrendts, Leopold
Stadtschloß, Berlin from the Lustgarten

Lotto 4001

Stadtschloß, Berlin from the Lustgarten. Circa 1856. Albumen print with rounded corners. 16,7 x 22,8 cm. Number 228 in ink in upper left corner. Mounted to board (some traces of use) with Phot. H. Hintze and publishing text printed below the image and annotated in ink on the mount.

This print was most likely printed shortly after Leopold Ahrendts' death in 1870. Several photographers such as H. Hintze used Ahrendts' glass plate negatives and often published the images under their own name. Hintze did, however, print some photographs while noting the photographer as Leopold Ahrendt's. – Some surface scuff marks in right portion an in upper left, otherwise in very good condition with a strong violet-brown tone and strong contrasts.

Amazonia / Koch-Grünberg Expedition
Portraits and ethnographical studies of Cubeo, ...

Lotto 4003

Photographer: George Huebner (1862 - 1935). Portraits and ethnographic studies of Cubeo, Uanána and other people of the Amazon region. 1903-05. 23 vintage collodion paper prints. Various sizes, most circa 11 x 7 cm and a few larger. Most annotated in pencil/crayon on the verso.

The German ethnologist and explorer Theodor Koch-Grünberg made a valuable contribution to the study of the indigenous peoples in South America, in particular the Pemon Indians of Venezuela and the indigenous peoples of Brazil in the Amazon region. Koch travelled with the photographer George Huebner to document the people he was studying. In 1906, he published photogravures of people he encountered on the expedition in his monumental "Indianertypen aus dem Amazonasgebiet nach eigenen Aufnahmen während seiner Reise in Brasilien" (1906). A written account of his trip, including his study of the Baniwa, was published in two volumes in 1910-11 under the title: "Zwei Jahre Unter Den Indianern. Reisen in Nord West Brasilien, 1903-1905" ("Two Years Among the Indians. Travels in North-West Brazil"). His descriptions of Brazilian tribes, illustrated with photographs are still used by anthropologists and ethnologists today. The photographs offered here were most likely illustrated in one of Theodor Koch's publications as most have notations referring to illustration numbers on the verso. – Some corners slightly bumped, some edge wear, a few with creases, otherwise in good condition.
